Sony Pictures has reportedly confirmed plans to adapt E.C. Segar's Popeye character into a new 3D animated film.

Avi Arad (Spider-Man) will produce the movie and Sony is negotiating with Mike Jones to pen the screenplay.

Speaking to Daily Variety, Arad said:

"I literally started singing the famous Popeye song [after securing rights to make the film]

"What always blew me away is the level of the animation. It was so beautiful and unbelievably detailed."

The film will feature the spinach-loving sailor, along with his hapless girlfriend Olive Oyl, their child Swee'Pea and arch-enemy Bluto.

Speaking about his involvement, Jones said that he is an "unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan".

He added: "Introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him."

In 1980, a Robert Altman-directed live action Popeye film was released starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. It bombed.
