Tim Burton has reportedly agreed to direct a new 3D stop-motion movie based on the original Addams Family cartoons.

According to Deadline, the Alice In Wonderland director intends to base the film on Charles Addams' drawings in The New Yorker, rather than the 1960s television show.

Universal's Illumination Entertainment will back the project after it optioned the rights to make a movie based on the cartoons.

Burton, who previously directed stop-motion films The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, will now apply his own visual style to the famous characters, including Gomez, Morticia and Uncle Fester.

In the 1990s, two live action Addams Family movies were released at cinemas starring Angelica Huston and the late Raul Julia.
