Hiroshima writer gets director's support ...
James Cameron has refused to rule out adapting a book about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in the Second World War, despite the non-fiction work being pulled over accuracy concerns.
Publisher Henry Holt and Company recalled Charles Pellegrino's text The Last Train From Hiroshima after the author was unable to answer questions about the reliability of his sources.
Cameron, who recently optioned the book, defended Pellegrino by saying that certain sources "clearly used elaborate deception to create a false account".
Last week, Pellegrino admitted that Joseph Fuoco, who he interviewed for the book, had falsely claimed to be on the Enola Gay, the US plane which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945.
After searching records, Holt was also unable to locate Father Mattia, who was claimed to have lived in Hiroshima at the time, and Jesuit scholar John MacQuitty, who apparently presided over his funeral.
However, Cameron told AP: "All I know is that Charlie would not fabricate so there must be a reason for the misunderstanding.
"Charlie's faulty source clearly used elaborate deception to create a false account. On our numerous projects together, I have known Charlie to be a diligent and thorough researcher who always does his best to cross-reference testimony."
The director reiterated his long-held ambition to make a film about the Hiroshima bombing, but admitted that he currently has no plans to "proceed in the short term".
