James Cameron's proposed movie about the bombing of Hiroshima in World War II has been dropped following inaccuracy allegations against the book it was to be based on.
Publisher Henry Holt and Company moved to halt further release of Charles Pellegrino's non-fiction text The Last Train From Hiroshima after it emerged that two men in the book never actually existed.
After searching the records, the firm was unable to locate Father Mattia, who the book claimed to have lived in Hiroshima at the time, and Jesuit scholar John MacQuitty, who presided over his funeral.
Last week, Pellegrino admitted that one of the people he interviewed had falsely claimed to be on the Enola Gay, the U.S. plane which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945.
In a statement released via The AP, Holt expressed its "deep regret" at not being able to "print, correct or ship" any more copies of Pellegrino's book.
"It is easy to understand how even the most diligent author could be duped by a source, but we also understand that opens that book to very detailed scrutiny," said a Holt statement.
"The author of any work of non-fiction must stand behind its content. We must rely on our authors to answer questions that may arise as to the accuracy of their work and reliability of their sources. Unfortunately, Mr Pellegrino was not able to answer the additional questions that have arisen about his book to our satisfaction."
Cameron and Pellegrino have collaborated many times before, including the author acting as an advisor on Cameron's Titanic and Avatar.
