Jazz legend passes on ...
British jazz legend Sir John Dankworth died yesterday at the age of 82, his family has confirmed.
During his 60 years as a mainstay on the jazz scene, the Saxophonist acted as musical director for artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole.
Dankworth, who was knighted in 2006 for services to music, passed away at King Edward VII Hospital in London.
The musician's death was announced by his wife Dame Cleao Laine during a concert at the couple's theatre in the grounds of their home in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire.
The all-star concert, which was initially planned as celebration of the venue's 40th year, subsequently became a tribute to the star.
Speaking to BBC News from his base in New York, Dankworth's agent Jim Murth said that it was "a sad day" for the world.
He added: "For British jazz and jazz around the world, I believe John has become such an international figure, particularly since he became Sir John Dankworth a few years ago."
Writing on Twitter, jazz singer Jamie Cullum described Dankworth as a "genius".
He wrote: "Sir John Dankworth, a great man and one of our finest musicians and composers, has died. Rest in peace sir."
