The little film picks up the big prize(s) ...

The Hurt Locker was the big winner at the 2010 Academy Awards, taking home six Oscars at a ceremony last night in Hollywood.

The drama, about a bomb disposal unit in the Iraq war, scooped the best picture prize and best director for Kathryn Bigelow.

Mark Boal won best original screenplay, while the film also picked up best editing, sound editing and sound mixing gongs.

By winning the best director award, Bigelow made history by becoming the first woman ever to pick up the prize.

Elsewhere, veteran star Jeff Bridges won the best actor Oscar for playing a washed-up country music singer in Crazy Heart.

Sandra Bullock beat competition from British stars Helen Mirren and Carey Mulligan to take the best actress award.

Best supporting actor prizes went to Inglourious Basterd's Christoph Waltz and Precious star Mo'Nique.

Pixar's Up secured best animated feature, while Avatar dominated the technical awards with Oscars for best art direction, cinematography and visual effects.
