Welcome to the latest instalment in our YLWL podcast series, in which we give a platform to some of the sharpest musical minds currently doing damage on the scene. Next up is Finnish producer Jori Hulkkonen, who delivers a magnificent
glimpse into the music which makes him happy.
Born in 1973 close to the Arctic Circle in the Finnish town of Kemi, Hulkkonen rapidly developed a distinctive appreciation for the warming quality of good music. After he started experimenting with electronic production in the late 1980s, Hulkkonen went on to release a variety of jacking, Chicago house-style tracks on European imprints such as Italy's ACV Records.
In 1996, he signed to Laurent Garnier's famed F Communications label to unleash debut album, Selkäsaari Tracks, on the world. Over the years, Hulkkonen has released many more records on F Comm, but also engaged in various collaboration projects.
Possibly his most famous side project has been with Tiga as Zyntherius on DJ Hell's Gigolo imprint. In 2001, the collaboration spawned the half a million selling single Sunglasses At Night, a version of Corey Hart's 1983 hit, which even earned the duo a performance on the sadly missed Top Of The Pops format.
Alongside DJing around the world and presenting a long-running show on Finnish national radio station YleX, Hulkkonen also released his tenth studio album, Man From Earth, this year on new home Turbo Recordings. And now he joins us for a podcast.
