Number Three in the cinematic franchise?

Sony Pictures has reportedly hired Oscar-nominated writer Steven Kight to adapt Dan Brown's thriller The Lost Symbol for the big screen.

According to Variety, Tom Hanks will once again take on the role of symbologist Robert Langdon in the film, after he appeared in adaptations of The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.

However, it's unclear whether director Ron Howard will also return for the third film.

Released last year, The Lost Symbol sees Langdon attempting to uncover a conspiracy around the Freemasons movement.

The novel shifted one million copies on its first day of sales and went on to sell over 80 million copies around the world.

British scribe Knight, who wrote 2002 feature Dirty Pretty Things has an existing relationship with Sony Pictures are recently selling them chess drama Pawn Sacrifice.
