Lulu and the Lampshades is the brainchild of Heloise and Luisa Lampshade, who became friends when they sat together in a school choir, passing the time scribbling notes to each other. They eventually formed a pretend band, but didn’t start playing properly until they got Jemma to step in after they were (musically) dumped by a boy.

Realising that they couldn’t do quite as many things at the same time as they’d like (including dancing onstage, with furniture) the emerging outfit recruited Dan on percussion, after he was spotted playing on a big water bottle with another band because he had forgotten his kit. Ever since, Lulu and the Lampshades have been dancing with furniture and taking their “dance like no-one is looking movement” to shows all around London (including the ICA).

We talk to Luisa about talking French, wedding plans and er, T-shirts.

So, what are you up to?

We’re sorting out some recording and we’re also working out backing vocals for another project. A man called Gaetan from France saw our cup video and wants us to sing in his band for a residency he’s doing at the Festival Trans Musicales in Rennes.

Are you looking forward to it? Et parles-tu français?

We cannot wait. Preparation so far is dominated by lengthly discussions about outfits and whether or not tin foil can be sustained through four nights of performance. And Heloise speaks very good pretend French as well. It’s exciting because we’ve barely performed outside London, and we’re going to play some of our own songs within the set. Apparently it’s a big old theatre with red velvet curtains and soft cushioned seats. Gaetan doesn’t know this yet but we plan to dress like tin soldiers.

What’s the story behind [new single] Feet to the Sky?

It’s about escapism and adventure, rupture against humdrum. It worked itself out when a friend and I cycled to Paris last New Year with next to no planning. It was the perfect little bit of escapism in cold winter.

And how’s "the dance like no one is watching" movement going?

I’m still yet to walk into a room and find everybody with inanimate objects on their heads, but that’s OK. These things take time, but ask the Lampshades, it’s much more their forte.

But how are you spreading the word?

First rule of movement: do not talk about movement.

Who is the best at dancing with furniture?

That sounds a bit wrong - mostly because it reminds me of a really gross youtube video where all these boys from some town in America made names for themselves by dry-humping the living room. Actually it’s pretty hilarious.

Who (or what!) would you like to perform with?

Who? Lots of people. I want to play with some Cumbia bands too. What? Our box needs more work, more things attached to bash with drum-sticks. I’m working on it but in truth I’m no carpenter.

What song would you love to cover and why?

We’ve just started playing All Night Long by the Mary Jane Girls. It’s really fun to sing. “Come up on the rooftop honey/What I got is better than money”. Great.

You once produced a series of T-shirts. Are they collectible now?

They’re going mouldy in a box under my parent’s roof. We were told they were mean-spirited, and we couldn’t sell them for any more than a fiver. Maybe we’ll give it another shot.

You’re getting married, how are the wedding plans?

All I know about it is that it’s going to be on April Fools.

What were you dreaming of before the Belleville triplets in Belleville Rendezvous?

Probably being like Bert from Mary Poppins. I quite wanted to be in Stomp too.
