Ridley Scott's new blockbuster Robin Hood has been selected as the opening movie for the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The film, which stars Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and William Hurt, re-imagines the emergence of legendary character Robin Hood.

It will be shown out of competition on the festival's opening day on 12 May, before going on general worldwide release on 14 May.

The film also features Pride & Prejudice star Matthew Macfadyn playing the Sheriff of Nottingham, a role which Crowe was initially tipped to play before he became Robin Hood.

Robin Hood also sees 45-year-old Crowe reunited with Scott after they worked together on 2000's Gladiator, along with comedy A Good Year in 2006 and Body of Lies in 2008.

Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton will lead the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
