Sandra Bullock has revealed that she found it tough to play a right-wing character for her Oscar-winning turn in The Blind Side.
In the John Hancock-directed sports drama, the actress portrays the real-life story of interior decorator Leigh Anne Tuohy who takes in an underprivileged youth.
Speaking to The Guardian, Bullock said that she "loved" the story but struggled how best to play Tuohy.
"The director said, after about eight months, 'Why don't you go and see Leigh Anne and see what I'm talking about? It'll explain her'," said Bullock.
"I met her and was really blown away by the energy she had. I stopped thinking about it like an actor just seeing a part, and the story is what finally got me."
Discussing criticism of the film's right-wing leaning, Bullock said that it was inevitable due to Tuohy's beliefs.
"Well, of course it's right-wing. They're right-wing characters, but I want to know - what parts are right-wing?" she said.
"People go, what is the hardest thing about playing this? And I go, playing a Christian Republican - and making sure I believed what I said!
"If it hadn't been successful people never would have said it was right-wing, but it is successful so I think they've just gotta hack away at it somehow."
