Who? A 25-year-old songwriting vocalist originally from County Cork, who moved to London seven years ago, and who has since found herself working with some of London’s most top producers and musicians.
Why? Exploring different musical genres and stretching herself as a vocalist (sounds painful), Aisling strikes a balance between a belief in her music and the right amount of humility to be in touch with the real world.
When & Where? EP You Took The Sun is available to buy on juno and Aisling's MySpace carries all the information you need on her antics and touring as she records her first album.
Because I don’t know anything else that can sooth the soul the way music can. Music crosses so many social and cultural divides, it’s like a porthole into the soul.
If you had to throw in the towel what would you do?
It’s difficult to imagine. Music is my first love and I’ve never invested as much time and energy in anything else. I intend to open a music centre for young teenagers so if Id probably start concentrating on getting that together.
What shapes your work?
My experiences and the lessons I’ve learned, as well as the artists I look up to, and have been influenced by. We are all influenced by someone or some thing. It could be a conversation with a stranger to a book you’ve read. I'll always write love songs though. Love is always relevant.
If you could, whose work would you sign off as yours?
Prince, not because he is necessarily my favourite artist of all time but, like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, he crossed the confines of genre and became a pop artist whilst remaining one of the most highly respected musicians today. I also love Marcina Arnold. She writes beautiful melodies.
How will Michael Jackson be remembered?
I will remember him as one of the greatest artists of all time and extremely misunderstood.
What is the state of the world right now?
It’s the same as always - messed up and confusing, but also fascinating in all its contradictions. The governments are still corrupt, countries keep invading each other, and all over the world there is still a massive divide between the rich and the poor. But the fact that people care that much has to be celebrated too. Human beings have an amazing ability to make beautiful art from hardship and adversity.
Does Radio One have a purpose?
I’m aware that Radio One is not unlike other radio stations and is designed to sell music and make money, let’s not kid ourselves. However it also allowed John Peel air time to showcase some amazing artists and helped launch a lot of musicians’ careers.
