Who? Camden-based New Wave punksters, The Duel, are Andy Thierum (on bass) who writes the band’s songs with vocalist Tara Rez, while Dave Renegade plays guitars, and PuMpY the drums.
Why? Doing what comes naturally for them, writing songs is the best way to express themselves, apparently.
When & Where? Currently on tour in Germany and the Czech Republic, before some U.K. gigs draw them back to Blighty, The Duel are working hard both here and abroad, so look out for the FFRUK Xmas Party (with Dave Ball, no less) on 18 December, and check their MySpace for full details.
Thierum: The original ideas are more relevant today than ever.
PuMpY: There are still bands and individuals artists that stand by their words and music.
Rez: It has spirit and encourages you to be who you really are, not a product of some background, upbringing or failing society.
How happy are you with Let’s Finish What We Started!?
Thierum: It’s all good memories and we’ve very happy.
PuMpY: It was what made me want to join The Duel.
How’s touring with the new album?
Renegade: Taking it to the people and playing live cannot be beat!
Rez: It’s been a hit so far, it’s exciting performing songs from both albums and even more wicked when they sing along with you!
You are already booked for festivals in 2010. What’s the appeal?
Thierum: Life, beer, adrenaline and rock n roll.
Rez: Wherever there is music and people there’s a buzz, excitement, and unity. It’s addictive!
How do you prepare for a gig?
Renegade: Listen to something gets me going, and I check my guitar is ready to go.
Rez: I just make sure everything’s sorted for a good show, but two or three vodkas are crucial for the nerves!
You played an Oxjam gig. What was the motivation?
Thierum: Without getting too Bono, it’s all for good causes.
Renegade: If I can use my music to help, then count me in.
Rez: It was a privilege to play. Many bands took part around the whole country with the same purpose.
Is punk in the noughties still political?
Thierum: Punk ideals haven’t changed. Whether people always follow is another matter.
Renegade: No it's another fashion brand, another youth cult. Punk has nothing to do with Mohicans, studs and black leather jackets; it’s an attitude.
Rez: It’s more about humanity. Something seems to be brewing under the surface, and wherever there is bullshit, lies and games, there will be angry people.
